Monaghan 1916 Commemoration series

On 10 November 2015, Prof Terence Dooley delivered a public lecture to a very large crowd in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, to mark the 100th anniversary of Patrick Pearse's visit to the town. The lecture was entitled: 'Patrick Pearse in Carrickmacross, November 1915, and his influence on Monaghan separatism.'

The respondent to the lecture was Mr Eamon O Cuiv TD, grandson of Eamon De Valera. Amongst the attendees were former Ceann Comhairle, Dr Rory O'Hanlon, Mr Seamus Kirk TD, Brendan Smith TD, as well as a grand niece of Con Colbert, one of the executed 1916 leaders. This was the first public lecture in the Monaghan 1916 Commemoration series.

Prof Dooley will deliver lectures in other parts of the county over the next year. He has also worked with Monaghan County Museum on an exhibition on 'Monaghan in 1916 and 1966', to be launched next Spring.
