Questions of attribution: identifying and locating Old Masters formerly in Irish collections

In the course of the nineteenth century a number of works attributed to such artists as Hals, Rembrandt and Velázquez were to be found in Ireland. Some of those attributions were highly optimistic but some were correct. A group of works, both dubious and authentic, provide informative case studies of questions of attribution and provenance, and help to flesh out the wider history of collections in Ireland.
