Third Annual International Famine Conference

The National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park House, County Roscommon, 19-20 July 2013

Call for papers

Theme       The  Famine Irish: Emigration & new lives

On 19-20 July 2013, the Department of History and the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates (CSHIHE) at the National University of Ireland Maynooth will host, in conjunction with the National Famine Museum at Strokestown Park House, an international, interdisciplinary conference to treat these important Famine issues in a synthetic manner. Bringing researchers together with a network of international experts, the conference will approach the above theme from the broadest possible historical perspective. It aims to promote thoughtful and wide-ranging analysis of emigration and diaspora during and after the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1853.

The conference keynote address will be given by Professor Christine Kinealy, Drew University, New Jersey.

Proposals for papers (30 minutes duration), exploring emigration and the lives of Irish emigrants during and immediately after the Great Famine in any location are now welcome. We particularly invite proposals for papers from postgraduate students and independent scholars.

Enquires and proposals of no more than 250 words, accompanied by a brief biographical sketch, should be sent to Dr Ciarán Reilly, Department of History, National University of Ireland Maynooth ( by 31 March 2013. Decisions on proposals as decided by the organising committee will be communicated by early April.
