Location

The Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses & Estates (CSHIHE) is located within the Department of History at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, Co. Kildare.

Its offices are currently situated in one of the oldest buildings on the South Campus which was originally constructed in the 1830s as a Junior Infirmary. The building was refurbished in 2008 thanks to the sponsorship of Pierce Contracting Ltd and the generosity of the Office of Public Works (OPW) who provided period furniture for the rooms.

NUI Maynooth is an ideal location for the CSHIHE. The university occupies an exceptionally fine suite of collegial buildings dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including major work by A.W. Pugin. At the other end of the town of Maynooth stands Carton House and Demesne, the former residence of the Dukes of Leinster. The great Palladian-style Castletown House is just a few miles away. The CSHIHE has offices in Castletown at the invitation of the OPW. In 2008, an Archive and Research Centre was also established at Castletown in a collaborative project between the OPW and NUI Maynooth.
